Coastal Geographic Information Systems (1 week) - New course designed as an intensive workshop to identify, obtain, reformat (if necessary), create (if necessary), re-project (if necessary) and otherwise curate high-resolution, coastal data files in support of marine research, management or general education. A team approach, involving multiple personal or 2-person team assignments. A static GIS data collection will be produced, possibly online (if website arrangements can be made).
-
Two MDL exercises were improved by material provided by the students, as follows:

Because the "course" was redesigned as a workshop to follow on the regular 2-week omnibus course in general methods, there was no need for extensive reading. Refer to the omnibus Pre-Course Reading to see what had already been covered.

Draft Pontal Coastal Atlas - Using methods from the prior course, Introduction to Marine Data Management II (2 weeks), the students surveyed and assessed the utility of many suggested atlas data layers. Using the general criterion that vector resolution should be at least 1:250,000 (worst case) or preferable as good as 10-100-m resolution, and that rasters could be no grosser than 4-km (worst case), the following layers were found, downloaded, subsetted and reformatted to ASC for rasters (the ESRI arc grid format) and to SHP for vectors (the ESRI shapefile format). The draft Atlas is being translated, reformatted to fit the host center's website, and updated by a designated group of student editors. A few sample images of data products are presented on the Atlas page. [NB: Some links no longer active]

The ferocious dragon who lived just outside our classroom, by the mangroves. The Christmas ribbon appeared mysteriously.
