MDL Docents/Instructors

In addition to the full suite of MDL Courses taught by Murray Brown, former students of exceptional merit have stepped forward to help with training in specific courses.  We are beginning to formalize this by naming "docents" listed here.  Most of these folks have already taken the MDL materials home and offered local training.  Even if you do not need any formal training, you can refer questions to the docents for answers in your own language.
Lilian (Lica) Anne Krug

  • Oceanographer (Federal University of Paraná- Brazil) with a Masters in Remote Sensing (National Institute for Space Research- Brazil)

  • Post-graduate study:  Observational Oceanography (NF-POGO Centre of Excellence in Observational Oceanography; Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences)

  • Currently enrolled in the PhD programme in Marine, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Algarve (Portugal).

  • Honored with a POGO-SCOR Visiting Fellowship for 2014

  • "I have experience in satellite data application on coastal and oceanographic studies and my main research interests are spatial and temporal series analysis of ocean-atmosphere interaction, climate variability and their impacts on ocean primary productivity and marine and coastal ecosystems. Really passionate on how to properly organize and manage all these data."

Lica actually began helping students in her first DM course at BIOS in 2010; as a teacher, she's a complete natural.  I grabbed her immediately and she's been helping in classes ever since.  MB
John Bemiasa

  • 2009: Tulear University, Marine Sciences and Fishery Institute. Defense Thesis: Oceanography and Fishery. Theme: “Traditional fishery dynamic on Anchovy, Octopus and Squid in the South West of Madagascar: use of oceanographic tools for resources management”. 

  • 1998- 2009:  UNESCO/IOC/IODE/Odinafrica, Ocean Data Management.  My first training course was started on ocean data management in the framework of the Odinea Project during the period 1998-2001, followed by the 2nd and 3rd phases of the project (Odinafrica II and III) between 2002 – present. Workshop and training were held each year in different IODE country members and embraced theoretical and practical aspects such as participation in regional and/or international scientific cruises. The two last oceanographic campaigns I’ve participated were: i) the ACSEX-I in the Mozambique Channel with R/V Pelagia of NIOZ and ii) the BEAGLE 2003 along the -20° S trackline between Capetown (SA) – Perth (Australia). The last two years cruises (2008, 2009) brought us respectively for 90 days along the east and the west coasts of Madagascar aboard the RV Dr Fridjoff Nansen. 

  • Since 2010: "I’m lecturer of Master I and License III at the Institut Halieutique et des Sciences. The main topics are: General Oceanography (Physical and Descriptive - L3) and Operational Oceanography (Master I). Marine Data-Handling Softwares : Ocean Data View and SAGA."

Sergio Ignacio Larios Castillo

Sergio is the senior lecturer for ODV and Saga, in my opinion, in the ocean data community of Mexico, with a long record of successful IODE course activities.  He is the guiding spirit for many training activities, and is my "go to" person for Hispanic issues. MB

  • “I have experience in developing field sampling protocols and  applying uni- and multivariate statistical analyses to characterize the biodiversity of coastal ecosystems. Recently I worked as an instructor/monitor of short courses for undergraduate students in marine GIS (with SAGA, ODV and IDV) and biological illustration . My research interests include ecosystem functioning, patterns of biodiversity distribution, and the structure of marine benthic ecosystems.”

João is working on his doctorate in Pontal/Parana, Brazil, and also in the Netherlands (beginning fall 2014).  He's an excellent local guide in Pontal and a good friend.
