Before the Marine Data Literacy (MDL) Project

Dr. Murray Brown, the author, taught IODE courses during courses in Asia, Africa and South America, and at the OceanTeacher Academy (OTA) facility in Ostend, Belgium.  The OTA began at the IODE in 2010, as an extension and re-organization of the previous OceanTeacher Marine Data Management Training Program (2000-2009).  That program followed on the Ocean Data and Information Network for East Africa (1996-1999) And in turn that program followed on the original OceanPC Program (1992-1996) the pioneer to all marine data training in developing countries.  Dr. Brown was an instructor in all those phases.

MDL Today

Based on experiences writing about 20 data "Road Maps" for the OTA in 2009-2010, the author set out to create about 100 exercises in 9 separate categories, plus a host of ancillary materials for educational purposes; you are in the MDL Project right now.  MDL constitutes, generally, a continuum of related steps in the creation of a marine data collection of very wide scope for a selected geographic area.  Ocean station data, use of GIS, and operational data area heavily emphasized.  Additionally, the author has been working with students internationally through his Help Desk and through the Courses and Training offered here.

Besides the OTA on-site courses in Ostend, the editor and docents have taught at these specially sponsored "external" courses.  Click any class name to see a larger image.
